COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) _ A White former South Carolina police chief is facing a second trial on a murder charge in the shooting of an unarmed Black man more than four years ago.
Former Eutawville police chief Richard Combs is charged in the May 2011 shooting death of Bernard Bailey. Combs’ first trial in Orangeburg in January ended with the jury deadlocked and the judge declaring a mistrial.
The defense had tried to have the first trial moved out of Orangeburg, saying it was impossible for Combs to get a fair trial in Orangeburg after other highly publicized cases in which Blacks died at the hands of White officers.
Jury selection begins Monday in Columbia before Circuit Judge Brian Gibbons of Chester.
