Medicare vs. Medicaid: What’s the Difference?
Medicare and Medicaid may sound alike, but they are two very different health care programs. The biggest difference? Medicare is generally based on age, while Medicaid is based on income and financial need. Understanding which program you qualify for can help you choose the coverage that’s right for you and your family.
Medicare
Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for people age 65 and older, although some younger people with qualifying disabilities may also be eligible. Delta Dental offers Medicare Advantage plans that include dental benefits, which helps members maintain their oral health while managing overall health care needs.
Medicaid
Medicaid provides medical and dental coverage for people with limited income and resources who qualify for the program. Depending on your age, income and family situation, you may be eligible for one of several Medicaid programs that include dental benefits.
Michigan Medicaid Programs
Healthy Kids Dental (HKD)
Healthy Kids Dental is available to children under age 21 who are enrolled in Medicaid. Administered by Delta Dental through the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, the program helps children receive routine dental care, preventive services and other covered dental treatments.
Healthy Michigan Plan (HMP)
The Healthy Michigan Plan provides medical coverage, including dental benefits, for eligible adults ages 19 to 64 whose income falls within program guidelines. Delta Dental partners with participating health plans to help administer dental benefits for HMP members.
MI Health Link (TriState Advantage)
MI Health Link combines Medicare and Medicaid benefits into one coordinated program for eligible individuals. Through participating health plans, members receive medical, dental and other covered health services designed to simplify their care.
MI Coordinated Health (MICH)
Managing multiple health benefits can be complicated. MI Coordinated Health (MICH) helps simplify care by bringing medical, behavioral health, pharmacy, home and community-based services, nursing home care and dental benefits together in one coordinated program.
MICH is available to eligible Michigan adults age 21 and older who are enrolled in both Medicare and Medicaid and live in Barry, Berrien, Branch, Calhoun, Cass, Kalamazoo, Macomb, St. Joseph, Van Buren and Wayne counties, as well as counties throughout Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (excluding Chippewa, Gogebic and Menominee).
Which Program Is Right for You?
If you’re turning 65, Medicare may be the coverage you’re looking for. If you’re concerned about affordability or meet certain income requirements, Medicaid may be an option. Some individuals qualify for both programs and may be eligible for coordinated coverage through programs like MI Health Link or MICH.
If you’re unsure which program is right for you, don’t guess. A quick conversation with a benefits representative can help you understand your options and make sure you receive the coverage that best fits your needs.
