At this year’s highly anticipated expo, the Grenadian presence was undeniable. The SOCAga booth not only drew long lines across the floor but also created an unforgettable experience for all who attended. As visitors eagerly lined up, the air was filled with the tantalizing aromas of spices and cocoa tea, creating an atmosphere that was both inviting and exciting. For many, the booth wasn’t just about food, it was about embarking on a sensory journey into the heart of Grenadian culture.

The booth’s culinary offerings were a feast for the senses, showcasing the rich flavors of Grenadian cuisine. At the heart of the menu was the island’s national dish, oildown, a savory, one-pot dish that combines salted meat, vegetables, and coconut milk, creating a uniquely comforting and hearty meal. Alongside it, attendees were treated to a variety of sweet and tangy treats, including tamarind balls, bakes & saltfish, coconut tarts, and sweet bread. Each dish offered a taste of Grenada’s rich food culture, inviting visitors to savor the diverse flavors of the island.

But it wasn’t just about the food. The booth offered a fully interactive experience where visitors could engage all five senses. They marveled at the colorful displays of Grenadian crafts and art, touched the textured items from the island, and, of course, engaged in lively, meaningful conversations. Each interaction allowed people to not only taste Grenada but also feel its warmth, heritage, and hospitality.

The success of the booth was a testament to the tireless work of SOCAga’s volunteers, caterers, and sponsors. For a decade, SOCAga Executive Director, Sherryl Calliste-Thegg, has poured her heart and soul into the organization, making this event a culmination of years of dedication and effort. In her own words, Calliste-Thegg expressed heartfelt gratitude, saying, “Working with you was a privilege; your collaboration and belief in us made this a truly special journey.”

Special recognition was given to SOCAga’s SPICE of the Caribbean Global Advocate sponsors—Chateau de la Mothe Grenada and Rainbow Inn Grenada, whose support helped elevate the booth experience to new heights.

Beyond its culinary offerings, the booth served as an educational hub, offering attendees a deeper understanding of Grenada’s rich cultural and historical contributions. Guests were intrigued to learn about the island’s connection to influential figures, including the mother of Malcolm X, the first Black Miss World Jennifer Hosten, Grammy-winning singer Estelle, legendary calypso artist Mighty Sparrow, acclaimed actress Nia Long, and even F1 driver Lewis Hamilton. These stories not only highlighted Grenada’s global influence but also helped attendees form a more personal connection to the island.

The popularity of SOCAga’s booth was also underscored by the high-profile guests who took the time to engage with the culture. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens, Dr. Bernice King, and V-103’s Maria Boynton all stopped by, showing their support for the Grenadian community. Headkrack of Dish Nation gave a special shout-out to SOCAga from the main stage, and The King Center’s social media featured the booth as part of its “Moments with our CEO, Dr. Bernice A. King,” adding to the booth’s high visibility.

The expo’s success was not just a win for SOCAga, it was a victory for the entire Grenadian diaspora. By showcasing the island’s vibrant culture and heritage, the booth served as a powerful reminder of Grenada’s place on the global stage. To cap off the day, a raffle offered exciting prizes, including a stay at Rainbow Inn Grenada, signed books from Dr. Ilyasah Shabbazz (Malcolm X’s third daughter), and chocolates from the Diamond Chocolate Factory. These prizes added an extra layer of excitement and celebration to what was already a truly remarkable event.

SOCAga’s booth at the expo was a resounding success, not just for its culinary offerings, but for the sense of community, culture, and connection it fostered. With the leadership of Sherryl Calliste-Thegg, the hard work of its volunteers, and the unwavering support of its sponsors, SOCAga has once again proven that Grenadian culture is both timeless and impactful on a global scale.
