The first week of summer ushered in oppressive heat, as temperatures soared into the 90s with the heat index approaching triple digits and extreme humidity causing many Atlanta residents to seek refuge indoors in air-conditioned spaces for cooling comfort. But for Black women these sweltering summer days not only impact personal comfort, the impact on hair – both condition and style – presents a sometimes daunting task to keep our crowning glory stylish and well-maintained.
Veteran hairstylist ‘Miss Tee’ a Georgia native who came to fame servicing professional clients in Tampa, Fla., who required a good deal of hair upkeep in the sweltering heat that state is known for. Coiffed hair and sophisticated styles are Miss Tee’s specialty, which is why she is sought out by celebrity clients and professional women who depend on her devotion to detail and elegance.
Miss Tee assures women that the summer heat does not relegate them to baseball caps and ponytails, instead they can manage their manes and emerge outdoors with their tresses intact under extreme conditions.
“During the summer and the impact of heat on the hair, hydration is key. That requires finding and researching the right products that work best for your hair. You have to be careful though, some products will dry the hair,” cautions Miss Tee. “I’ve always used the Straight Requests conditioning treatment lines. I love their shampoos and conditioners, their whole line, the relaxers. I’ve been using this line for the entire time I’ve been in the business, and that has been more than 30 years,” she adds with exuberance.
The celebrated hairdresser emphasizes that Black women are not limited to natural hairstyles during the warmer months and counsels women that natural styles don’t necessarily translate to less care and minimal maintenance than straight and more elaborate summer hairstyles.
“I like short styles. I also love quick weaves and sew-ins,” explained Miss Tee who is notes for her own tapered style with a heft flowing front bang. “When there’s a transformation from plain to something glamorous, that’s what I like,” she says beaming. “A person may come to me with thinning or damaged and if they need a haircut and some hair added via extensions, I’ll work at a transition to make them look and feel better. I like that. I like the transition of the creativity of it all,” Miss Tee explains.
Many of Miss Tee’s inspired looks include hair extensions and hair coloring although she warns there are risks and drawbacks with the latter. “With color, it depends on how [dramatic] a change you want to make. I recommend my clients use temporary or semi-permanent colors or rinses, as opposed to permanent dye. Permanent colors are more damaging because they mess up the cuticle of the hair. Once the cuticle swells, it could be damaged,” she cautions. “Anytime you’re lightning the hair, you’re taking a chance, taking a risk on your hair, especially if your hair is fine. I don’t recommend permanent colors at all for fine hair.”
Miss Tee’s dedication to her craft and her clients led her to expand her repertoire of services for a more comprehensive and cohesive look. The stylist now offers complete head to chin styling in every session. “I’ve been incorporating makeup and makeovers. It’s all coming together. I love a complete look, from the hair to the makeup, to accessories and even clothes,” she says glowing. “Now, back in the day, I didn’t do the makeup, but now I do brows and lashes too.”
