Johnathon Burton Named Finalist For 2025 Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA Scholastic Coach of the Year

The Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA recently announced that Johnathon Burton, head boys’ basketball coach and sixth-grade science teacher at Creekland Middle School, has been named a finalist for the 2025 Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA Scholastic Coach of the Year. Burton, who was nominated by the Atlanta Hawks, is one of only five scholastic coaches recognized nationwide for his dedication to youth basketball.

Fan voting for the Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA Coach of the Year is now open and will run through Sunday, June 22. The winner will be selected based on a combination of public voting (25%), an interview (25%), and evaluation by an executive panel (50%). There is no limit to the number of times fans may vote each day during the voting period.

“Being recognized as a national finalist for the Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA Coach of the Year is an incredible honor and a deeply humbling experience,” said Johnathon Burton. “It means that the time, energy, and heart I pour into coaching are resonating not just with my players, but with the broader basketball community. To know that my efforts to build character, teach life skills, and create a positive, inclusive environment are making an impact is truly rewarding.”

Burton has established himself as a committed mentor, educator, and leader within his school community, using basketball to instill discipline, character, and academic accountability in his players. His coaching philosophy emphasizes a defense-first approach combined with real-world lessons, preparing student athletes for success both on and off the court. His ability to develop strong relationships and motivate athletes has earned him widespread respect throughout the local community.

With more than four years of coaching experience across recreational, school, and AAU levels, Burton has helped Creekland Middle School’s basketball program flourish by fostering a culture of teamwork and sportsmanship. Additionally, he launched Creekland’s first male mentorship program to provide guidance for young men and remains actively engaged in the school’s academic leadership.

“Johnathon Burton represents the very best of what youth coaching can be,” said Hawks Vice President of Basketball Programs and Community Impact, Jon Babul. “He is a leader, mentor, and role model who uses basketball to empower young athletes and positively shape their lives. His work is a powerful example of how youth sports can be a catalyst for lifelong success, and we are proud to support him as he represents Atlanta on the national stage.”

As a finalist, Burton will receive a $1,000 grant and coaching resources from the Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA to support youth development within Creekland Middle School’s basketball program.

The Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA Coach of the Year award, presented in partnership with the Positive Coaching Alliance, recognizes two outstanding youth basketball coaches, one from a community-based program and one from a scholastic setting within a NBA, WNBA, or G League market. Candidates are selected based on their leadership, integrity, positive influence, and lasting impact on the lives of young people.
