LOS ANGELES — The 2016 BET Awards excelled on multiple fronts Sunday night, including the powerful opening number by megastar Beyonce, who ignited the stage with her lightning rod of a song “Freedom” with the equally controversial performer Kendrick Lamar.
But the night belong to the incomparable Prince Rogers Nelson, the late legendary megastar who passed away at the early age of 57. Unlike the much-maligned tribute offered up at the Billboard Awards last month, BET’s Stephen Hill promised a much more comprehensive and explosive send off to Prince, one of the most versatile artists the country has ever witness. And he delivered on his promise.
Sheila E., his beautiful drummer protege back in the 80’s, got things started off and it was followed by the likes of living legend Stevie Wonder, Jennifer Hudson, Erykah Badu, Janelle Monae, Bilal, Maxwell and others. Take a look at portions of the power-packed tribute to the one and only Prince.
