Lifestyles Report…Beautiful young people

Must read

This year I didn’t get an opportunity to see any people going to the prom in person, but thanks to Facebook and text messages I did get to see a lot of beautiful pictures. I must say this has been a standout year for the young ladies. They looked beautiful in their dresses, which were modest but still very fashionable. Their hair and makeup was on point, they looked like they belonged on the cover of a magazine or the red carpet. A few of them had their makeup professionally done by traveling glam squads. That is a big change from my day. I made my dress and wore the same dress to two proms. Even the young men looked sharp, as well they should, going to the prom is such a rite of passage and you should enjoy it and wear something that you won’t regret.

Also, thanks to Facebook I got to see a lot of graduates from high school and college. The parents must be so proud to see their children walk across the stage and collect that diploma or degree. So those of you who are new parents, these are the events that you plan for and save your money for. If your children are young start saving and planning now. Help your children with homework as much as you can so when the time comes for them to apply to college or for scholarships they will have a good chance. And if they aren’t ready to go away to school, don’t be ashamed to let them attend a community college first. I hate to see parents waste money on tuition for a student that has no idea what direction they want to go. It is such a pleasure to see young people grow and succeed.

Now, here is something for you that I have not done in a long time, so let’s see who reads my column all the way to the bottom. On Friday, June 12, at the Homewood Library there will be a staged reading of “Tambourines To Glory.” This is a sparkling gem from the canon of the great Langston Hughes. It begins at 6 p.m. and I am the narrator. The Library is located at 7101 Hamilton Ave., in Homewood. If you are unfamiliar with a staged reading, this is when the cast sits on the stage and reads the play. The play is funny and I know you will enjoy it. This is a one night only performance. I am giving away a pair of tickets to the first two emails that send me an email with the phrase “I want to go to Glory” in the subject line.

Please spread the word about this great peace of work that will only be $5 with a reception following the production.

Once again, don’t let anyone tell you there is nothing to do in Pittsburgh. There has been so much going on lately that I can hardly keep up. When I receive the winning emails I will email you to confirm how to get your tickets.
