There is nothing like a beautiful woman in a sensational spring hat and on May 9, at the LeMont Restaurant, there were hundreds attending the annual Spring Hat Sensation Luncheon presented by Central Baptist Church. The Deaconess Ministry was the host and Rev. Victor Grigsby is the pastor. Deaconess Doreen Mitchell is chairwoman of the Deaconess Ministry while Deaconess Rose Dreisbach is vice chairwoman. Deaconess Karen Edy-Lockett served as the event chairperson.

The afternoon featured worship in dance with the Hill Dance Academy Theater, worship in song with Sister Aisha Gunter, worship in music with Brother Howard Booker and worship in word with Rev. Victor Grigsby. There were door prizes and a delightful lunch, but the centerpiece of the afternoon was the Servant’s Heart Award presentation, this year presented to Rev. Marie Kelly, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church. Reverend Kelly is a native of Pittsburgh and has been married to her husband, Deacon Melverse Kelly, for 42 years, they have four children and two grandchildren.

Reverend Kelly has been a faithful member of Calvary Baptist Church for over 35 years. She graduated from the Harty Bible School in 1991 and completed course study in theology at the American Baptist Theology Seminary of Nashville, Tennessee, located at the Pittsburgh Extension. For 22 years, she enriched the souls of many while ministering in the Prison Ministry at the Allegheny County Jail sponsored by Lydia’s Place. Under the leadership and sound teaching of Pastor Sammie Bassord, she was licensed to preach the gospel in 2004, as Min. Marie Kelly. In 2006, Rev. J. Van Alfred Winsett ordained her as a reverend. Pastor Marie Kelly is the first woman to serve as senior pastor of Calvary Baptist Church and is counted as the first woman senior pastor to lead a congregation in the Hill District area.
