Funeral For Sportscaster Joe Walker Thursday At 11 A.M.

Final rights for retired sportscaster and broadcaster Joseph “Joe” Walker will be held Thursday, June 30, at 11 a.m. at the Church of the Incarnation on Cascade Road,  with the Rev. Canon Dr. A. Gordon Okunsanya officiating.

A blind sportscaster who “saw” action for radio listeners, Joe Walker was the sports director for radio stations WAOK, WIGO and WVEE, as well as a sports announcer for WGST.  He published several sports articles in Jet, PM, and NBA magazines, and was cited for his sports ability by the 100% Wrong Club and inducted into the 100% Right Club. In 1977, Walker was honored by the Georgia General Assembly. In 1984, he was cited Sportscaster of the Year and in 1986 was cited Broadcaster of the Year.  Walker was also recipient of the Pioneer Award in Journalism in 1985.

Walker, 80, died on Tuesday, June 22. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances, Fouch Walker. He leaves to cherish his memories four children, Joan Walker, Rosalyn Walker, Kenneth Walker, and Joseph F. Walker; sister-in-law, Sandra Fouch Smith; grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Burial will be at Lincoln Cemetery, following the funeral, with Murray Brothers Funeral Home in charge.
