Community members, descendants, and preservation advocates gathered on June 27th to celebrate the installation of historic signage at the Albert-McGuire Cemetery, recognizing the site’s importance to DeKalb County’s African American history.
The dedication ceremony honored the legacy of individuals such as Clara Albert McGuire, a respected midwife; David C. Albert, a veteran, civil rights advocate, and founding member of the DeKalb NAACP; and Lieutenant Melvin McGuire, the first African American police officer for the City of Decatur.
CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson joined the Albert-McGuire family and community partners to commemorate the occasion and reaffirm the County’s commitment to preserving historic sites and the stories they represent.
Supported by DeKalb County, the new historic markers help ensure that future generations can learn about the contributions and achievements of those who helped shape the Lithonia community and DeKalb County.
The event also included a cemetery clean-up effort, highlighting the ongoing commitment of descendants and volunteers to preserve this important piece of local history.
