Clipse has made history as the first rap act to perform at the Vatican.
The ground-breaking moment came on Saturday (September 13) during the Grace for the World concert, a global event co-directed by Pharrell Williams aimed at promoting peace and unity, at St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican.
The Thornton Brothers, Pusha T and No Malice, known together as the group Clipse, performed alongside John Legend for a live rendition of their track “The Birds Don’t Sing” from their album Let God Sort Em Out.
The Grace for the World concert was held at the Vatican as part of the World Meeting on Human Fraternity. Pharrell helped organize the event through his company, Something in the Water.
“This is a rare cultural moment where the world stops and collectively tunes in,” he said ahead of the show. “It is a message of unity and grace for all of humanity.”
The concert also featured performances and appearances from Jennifer Hudson, BamBam, Jelly Roll, Karol G, Teddy Swims, and Maestro Andrea Bocelli. During the event, a dramatic aerial drone and light show by Nova Sky Stories projected Sistine Chapel-inspired imagery over Vatican City.
Grace for the World was livestreamed globally, while thousands attended the event in person.
Reflecting on the event’s significance, Bocelli said, “Let us shine a spotlight on humanity with music from the very heart of Christianity and the most important spiritual square, reaching the entire world with a single message of brotherhood and peace.”
