Today, former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms kicked off her campaign for governor of Georgia, focusing on delivering leadership that looks out for Georgians and creates economic opportunity against the backdrop of Donald Trump’s chaos in Washington, D.C.
In her launch video, entitled “For Georgia,” Bottoms recalls the early-morning phone calls her grandmother made to every member of the family — simple acts of love that let them know someone always had their back. Bottoms says Georgians deserve the same approach from their state government.
“This is a defining moment for Georgia and for our country,” Bottoms said. “With chaos in Washington, Georgians need a leader who will stand up for them. I’m running for governor to fight for Georgia families and deliver the leadership they deserve.
“As mayor, I led Atlanta through difficult times, supported small businesses, raised pay for first responders, and expanded affordable housing. As governor, I’ll focus on expanding Medicaid, making housing more affordable by cracking down on corporate landlords, supporting our teachers and giving kids better pathways to enroll in college or start career training. Georgia families deserve far better than what Donald Trump and Republicans are giving us right now – I will be a governor for all Georgians.”
Bottoms launched her campaign with several key policy priorities that she would pursue as Georgia’s next governor:
-
Expanding Medicaid – Georgia is one of nine states that have not expanded Medicaid. As governor, Bottoms would make it her top priority to expand Medicaid, which would cover nearly 300,000 uninsured residents and stop the wave of rural hospital closures.
-
Supporting Georgia’s teachers – As mayor, Bottoms delivered historic pay raises for police officers and firefighters. As governor, she would support Georgia educators and schools by eliminating state income taxes for teachers.
-
Keep Housing Affordable – Bottoms would crack down on corporate landlords who drive up rents and home prices while helping families afford their homes and build wealth in the communities they love.
-
Helping Georgians Thrive – Bottoms would support small business growth across Georgia and create stronger pathways to college or career training so every child and adult learner can thrive in Georgia’s future economy.
Keisha Lance Bottoms served as the 60th Mayor of Atlanta, where she steered the city through a pandemic, secured major investments in affordable housing, delivered a historic pay raise for Atlanta’s police and fire departments, supported small business and economic opportunity and balanced the budget. Mayor Bottoms was born and raised in Georgia, and was called to public service to build opportunities for working families like the ones she grew up in. She and her husband, Derek, live in Atlanta with their four children.
