The president of the NAACP chapter in Spokane, Wash. has been falsely claiming she is a black woman for many years, her white parents have divulged to the media.
On Thursday, Rachel Dolezal’s parents told local media outlets that their daughter’s heritage is Czech, Swedish, and German with possible traces of Native American.
Dolezal, 36, who’s been the president of the the NAACP  since January, serves as chair of the city’s police oversight commission and is a professor of Africana studies at Eastern Washington University.
According to the Spokesman-Review, Dolezal misrepresented herself on her application for the city commission, writing that her ethnicity included white, black, and American Indian. Officials told the Spokesman-Review they were investigating whether she violated any city policies.
According to her staff biography at EWU, Dolezal received her master’s degree from Howard University, the famed historically black college in Washington, D.C.
“Her passion for civil rights is influenced by her years in Mississippi, where she advocated for equal rights and participated in community development,” the bio states. Dolezal’s biography also states she has been the victim of at least eight “documented hate crimes.”
However, the local police have found little evidence of any racial harassment, the media has reported.
Rumors about her true ethnicity have swirled about her for years. And when asked by a local television station is she was indeed black, Dolezal refused to answer the question.
In several interviews, Dolezal has also referred to her black sons. But those two boys are actually adopted siblings, her parents said to the Couer d’Alene Press.
When asked about her parents’ statements, Dolezal maintained that she was black and that her parents abused her and her siblings when they were children.
“They can DNA test me if they want to,” she added, remaining resolute with the stance that she is indeed partially black.
