10 Reasons to Quit Smoking that Don’t Have to Do with Lung Health

We all know how important lung health is, especially in connection with smoking, but sometimes it just gets too repetitive to listen to yet again. I remember somebody on TV saying that what convinced them to quit smoking was when they read that it could cause premature wrinkles. Sometimes, the reasons to quit smoking that will really stick with you are the ones you don’t hear quite enough.
  1. You may think that smoking calms you down, but once you quit you’ll actually be less anxious. People who quit show reduced anxiety, while people who continue to smoke show small increases in stress over the long term. You may not add much to your stress levels if you keep smoking, but you’ll certainly reduce them if you quit, which is good news for people with anxiety or heart issues.
  2. Hate the dentist? Good news for quitters: stopping smoking can reduce your risk of dental problems, including gum disease and cavities. Did you know you can get oral cancer, too? Even more reason to kick the habit. According to HealthDay, smokers have 1.5 times more risk of developing a minimum of three health conditions when compared with former smokers.
  3. Like it or not, there is a link between smoking and a decreased sex drive. Plus, whether you’re a man or a woman doesn’t seem to matter. If you’re dying for more time between the sheets but your libido’s just not where it used to be, get rid of the cigarettes. Smelling and tasting better doesn’t hurt in the romance department, either.
  4. How can you slather on SPF every single day and still light up? Quitting smoking will help your skin get back to its best. Puffing away affects your skin tone, makes your skin sag and causes wrinkles, particularly around the lips and eyes.
  5. Don’t get too used to that full head of thick hair if you’re a smoker – smoking’s been linked to male pattern baldness. Stress is another risk factor for baldness, and as we learned, smoking can increase your anxiety levels.
  6. You’ve been so snippy lately and your friends are starting to notice. Perk up your mood by quitting smoking. Brown University research found that stopping smoking can make you happier. To really drive the point home, consider this: researchers found that not only were participants happiest while they abstained from smoking, but if they returned to the habit, some of them were more sad than they were before they even quit.
  7. Love birthday cake? You’ll get to eat much more of it if you stop smoking. A study published in The Lancet in 2012 showed that women can live as much as a decade longer if they quit smoking. Even light smokers had a higher risk of premature death than non-smokers.
  8. If you’re trying to start a family, your chances of getting pregnant will improve if you quit smoking. According to NBC News, women who smoke have a 60% higher chance of being infertile when compared to non-smokers. Smokers also have a higher chance of having a miscarriage.
  9. You can’t be a foodie and a smoker at the same time, at least not if you want to enjoy all that delicious cuisine. There’s an association between smoking and having fewer and flatter taste buds.
  10. Colds are never fun, but for smokers, even a mild cold can wreak more havoc than it has to. People who smoke have immune systems that overreact to viruses, according to a 2008 study in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.
