Democrats Projected to Take Control of U.S. House, Putting Hakeem Jeffries on Path to Historic Speakership

Democrats are projected by election forecasters to regain control of the U.S. House of Representatives in the 2026 midterm elections, setting the stage for a major shift in Washington and a potentially historic moment for House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries.

If Democrats secure at least 218 seats and elect Jeffries as speaker, the New York congressman would become the first Black person to lead the U.S. House of Representatives in the nation’s history.

Jeffries, who became the first Black lawmaker to lead a major party in Congress in 2023, has served as House Democratic leader while Republicans controlled the chamber.

A Democratic majority would give the party control over House committees, congressional investigations and legislative priorities during the final two years of President Donald Trump’s second term.

Throughout the midterm campaign, Democrats emphasized the cost of living, health care and government accountability, while Republicans sought to defend their congressional majority and advance the president’s legislative agenda.

For Jeffries, the election represents an opportunity to make history at one of the highest levels of American government. The speaker of the House is second in the presidential line of succession, following the vice president.

Although election forecasts point toward Democratic control, the final balance of power will depend on the results of outstanding congressional races. The House must also formally elect its next speaker when the new Congress convenes in January 2027.

If elected, Jeffries would break a historic racial barrier in congressional leadership while assuming responsibility for guiding the House through a divided political landscape.
