DeKalb County Commissioner Nicole Massiah joined physicians,
healthcare professionals, insurance experts and community leaders Saturday for a
healthcare roundtable hosted by Dr. Heavenly Kimes and Dr. Damon Kimes, where
participants examined strategies to improve healthcare access, affordability and
outcomes for Georgia families.
Massiah, who represents DeKalb County Commission District 3, contributed to
discussions centered on healthcare reform, insurance accessibility, preventive care,
mental health services and reducing health disparities, issues of concern to District 3
residents. The invitation-only event brought together medical experts and public officials
committed to identifying practical, community-driven solutions to some of Georgia’s
most pressing healthcare challenges.
Massiah emphasized that healthcare reform begins with listening to residents and
building partnerships that connect families with the resources they need.
“Healthy communities are built when government, healthcare providers and community
organizations work together,” Massiah said. “And listen to the people. Every family
deserves access to quality healthcare, preventive services and the opportunity to thrive
regardless of their ZIP code.”
Massiah said improving healthcare access is closely connected to her broader vision for
District 3, which focuses on equipping residents with the tools, resources and
opportunities needed to shape the future of their neighborhoods.
“As we continue moving District 3 forward, our strategy is centered on helping residents
take control of their future,” she said. “That means investing in healthier communities,
strengthening partnerships, expanding access to essential services and ensuring every
resident has a voice in the decisions that affect their quality of life.”
Hosted at Switchyards Downtown Club in Atlanta, the roundtable featured a panel of
healthcare professionals who explored challenges related to Medicaid and Medicare,
Affordable Care Act implementation, insurance barriers, addiction and mental health
treatment, preventive medicine, and strategies to improve healthcare outcomes across
Georgia.

The event also incorporated healthcare concerns submitted by Georgia residents,
ensuring community perspectives helped shape the conversation and
recommendations.
Massiah said collaborative forums like the healthcare roundtable create opportunities for
policymakers and healthcare leaders to develop solutions that reflect the needs of the
communities they serve.
“Real progress happens during real conversations with real people; sometimes it’s
situations like this that make more of a difference than what we see in Washington,” she
said.
