The two-year grant will provide operations support for the historic Atlanta theater company
True Colors Theatre Company today announced it has received a $550,000 grant from the Mellon Foundation that will provide general operations support over the next two years. This is the second grant of this magnitude from Mellon; the first was in 2024.
The Mellon gifts have supported additional staff capacity for fundraising, general management and marketing, all of which are consistent with True Colors’ strategic plan. “We are thrilled to have the continued support from the Mellon Foundation as we move forward with our mission to both bring sterling productions to the stage and foster innovative community engagement,” said True Colors Managing Director Chandra Stephens-Albright.
True Colors Theatre, founded in 2002 by Tony Award-winning director and producer Kenny Leon, has a legacy of artistic excellence and community engagement. In recent years, True Colors, under the direction of Artistic Director Jamil Jude since 2019, has elevated that legacy through several new initiatives including a national new play commissioning program, new high school monologue competition and an engaging portfolio of community programming.
Earlier this year, Stephens-Albright announced that she will retire from her role at the conclusion of the organization’s fiscal year on July 31, 2026, after nine years of dedicated service to the company. The theater company is currently conducting a search for her replacement.
True Colors Theatre Company is a nonprofit regional theater company based in Atlanta, GA. True Colors Theatre Company’s mission is to celebrate the rich tradition of Black storytelling while giving voice to bold artists from all cultures. We add dimension and relevance to our work on the stage through community events and education programming.
