Aaron Johnson, the leading candidate to replace outgoing councilmember Carmalitha Gumbs for the South Fulton City Council District 2 seat, won a decisive victory in the second major debate Friday night, Sept. 19. The debate, hosted by the South Fulton Democrats and the South Metro Democratic Women’s Council, was held at The Enon Church, and comes on the heels of Mr. Johnson’s big win in the first debate held in August.
Before a large crowd, Mr. Johnson delivered commanding answers on neighborhood priorities, city finances, and public safety strategies—earning applause and praise from the audience of residents, community, civic, and business leaders.
“Aaron Johnson showed tonight why he is the frontrunner,” said Verna Cleveland, Mr. Johnson’s chief strategist. “He combines 30 years of public service on all four levels of government—federal, state, county, and city—with the skills needed to represent District 2 on the Council. Voters saw that he offers impeccable integrity and unmatched leadership experience without the distractions of scandal. Aaron is committed to keeping taxes low while making us and our communities safer and stronger.”
Mr. Johnson highlighted his record of championing local economic development, supporting public safety investments without raising taxes, and working to improve parks, sidewalks, and infrastructure. He emphasized his plans to deliver responsive city services and ensure transparency at City Hall.
“District 2 residents want effective, honest government,” Mr. Johnson said after the debate. “Tonight’s conversation proved that our campaign is ready to deliver the results families need and deserve—from safer streets to responsible budgeting and smart growth. I’m not waiting for day one; I am ready now.”
