Jurors in the federal criminal trial of Sean “Diddy” Combs began deliberations on Monday but quickly encountered a problem. About an hour into their discussions, the jury sent a note to Judge Arun Subramanian expressing concern that one juror, identified as Juror No. 25, could not follow the judge’s instructions. In response, the judge reminded the jurors of their duty to deliberate and adhere to his legal instructions.
Combs, 55, faces five charges, including racketeering conspiracy and multiple counts of sex trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution. If convicted of the most serious charges, he could face life in prison. The early issue with Juror No. 25, a 51-year-old scientist from Manhattan, is considered significant. Jury consultant Alan Tuerkheimer noted that such concerns, raised early in deliberations, could lead to complications, especially since another juror was dismissed earlier in the month for inconsistent disclosures.
The foreperson of the jury requested to speak with the judge or have Juror No. 25 interviewed, a step that could lead to further actions. Judge Subramanian instructed prosecutors and defense attorneys to confer before he decides how to proceed. The situation presents a potential challenge for the trial, as it could impact the verdict and lead to appeals if Combs is convicted.
