SOMERVILLE, Mass.– The Mayor of the Massachusetts-based city says that he will not remove a banner stating that ‘Black Lives Matter’ from City Hall.

Somerville’s police union asked Mayor Joseph Curatone to remove the sign and replace it with one that reads “All Lives Matter.”

Curatone said in a statement Wednesday that the banner will remain, saying his “unwavering support for our police officers does not and cannot preempt our commitment to addressing systemic racism in our nation.”

The sign has been hanging above the main entrance to Somerville City Hall for nearly a year, according to the Associated Press.
