ATLANTA — The decade-long ban on assault rifles in America had recently expired. Orlando gay club shooter Omar Mateen exploited this lull in the law to purchase an AR-15 rifle and commit the worst mass murder in American history and the worst terror attack since 9-11.
Rep. Mary Margaret Oliver, D-Decatur, wants to reinstate the ban and said the mass murder at the Pulse nightclub in Central Florida should warrant a “rational response.”
A policy discussion is in order, she said, on what to do about assault weapons that only exist to “kill people rapidly,” she said, according to the Dalton Daily Citizen.
“I doubt I am the only one in Georgia who thinks it’s time to have a conversation,” she said.
Oliver, ironically, had filed a bill this year that would have banned a long list of weapons including the AR-15. The newspaper reported that her bill never received a hearing.
However, Rep. Alan Powell, chairman of the House Public Safety and Homeland Security Committee, where the bill was assigned, said that’s because Oliver never asked for one.
“Quite frankly, we welcome that discussion,” he said Monday, according to the paper.
