Former Obama administration advisor and current Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is sticking his chest out these days as O’Hare International Airport has reclaimed the title of world’s busiest airport for flight operations from Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport thus far in 2014.
During a recent address at an aviation convention, Emanual quoted stats from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that shows O’Hare recorded more than 585,517 takeoffs and landings From Jan. 1 through the end of August, compared to Hartsfield-Jackson’s 582,138.
Things could change, however, as we progress into the fall and winter seasons, says Hartsfield-Jackson spokesperson Reese McCraine.  McCraine said the weather will likely work in Atlanta’s favor as the year comes to an end. Winters are much harsher in the Northeast and Midwest can affect overall flight operations, he said.
Another thing in Hartsfield-Jackson’s favor: Chicago has two major airports within its city limits (Chicago Midway) that splits the number of flights that go in and out of the Windy City.
The FAA states Atlanta continues to be tops in the number of passengers, thanks mostly to Atlanta-based  Delta Airlines Inc., which uses large aircrafts to transport large numbers of passengers, according to WABE.
