A mother in Alabama is irate that her scholastically gifted 7-year-old son was sent to the principal’s office and initially suspended because the school didn’t approve of the design in his new haircut.
“He was like upset and he said I had to come get him out of school because he was being suspended. He was pulled out of class, saying that he had a design in his head but it really wasn’t a design, it was a part,” Keisha Rembert told WBRC.
To make matters worse, Rembert reminded the school that Rashaad Hunter is an honor roll student who hasn’t gotten into trouble at Greenwood Elementary School in Bessemer, Ala.. about 15 miles southwest of Birmingham.
“He was walking with his head down, when I saw him he was like teary-eyed at first because he doesn’t want to be suspended for no part in his head. I told him, ‘Don’t hold your head down…continue to make these A’s and B’s because that part is nothing,’” Rembert said.
“They need to notate or clarify what is a design? Spongebob, a part, a tennis shoe, whatever,” Rembert said.
According to WBRC:
Bessemer City Schools Superintendent Dr. Fred Primm said it’s hard to define an acceptable hairstyle in black and white in the school handbook. He said this is usually handled on a case by case basis.
Dr. Primm has decided not to suspend the young student and says he will clarify what is acceptable in the student handbook.
