A graduate of the nation’s only predominantly African-American men’s private collegiate institution has been appointed to a top position for next year’s Democratic convention.
Convention CEO Leah D. Daughtry said Whack is the right person for the job. “We are pleased that Lee is joining the convention team,” she said. “I am confident his background and experience will help us achieve our goal of being the most engaging, inclusive and forward-looking convention in history.”
Lee is the former communications director for U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.), having served from February 2014 until his appointment by the convention. A native of Pittsburgh and raised in the Chicago metropolitan area, Whack has worked as a public relations manager for the D.C. Housing Finance Agency and as a communications staffer for Democrats in the Illinois State Senate.
A former reporter with the Chicago Tribune, Whack has handled the media for the National Public Housing Museum and the 2010 Illinois state treasurer’s race.
At the convention, the Democrats will select their nominee for president and vice president, as well as adopt an official party platform and create rules and procedures for the nomination process for the 2020 elections.
