Lifestyles Report…I saw it in the Courier

Perhaps the title of this column should be, “When is my story or picture going to be in the New Pittsburgh Courier?”
That is the big question I am asked when I come out to cover stories. That question always leads me to a question. Don’t you just hate when someone answers a question with another question? I bet you do because I do. So here it goes, “how do you get your Courier?”
Crickets… now if you don’t get what crickets means, how about a blank stare, with total silence? Often, I am told that they don’t know where to get one and “I don’t buy the Courier.”  Then I ask them where they live and I ask if they have ever been to a Giant Eagle? Most often the answer to that question is yes. This is “real talk,” then they tell me “well I don’t buy newspapers.” “You’re killing me.”  As I maintain my cool I explain where the paper can be purchased and that we offer subscriptions. I used to carry subscription forms with me. The first thing I am going to do when I complete this column is  make more forms, and load them into my camera case and in my wallet.
As a 14-year employee of the New Pittsburgh Courier I still look forward to getting my paper each week and as an employee I am entitled to one free copy, but I go out and buy several copies and give them to friends. The cost is one dollar and I feel that is a dollar well spent for a historic paper that has been in existence for over 100 years. I am so proud to be a part of this publication. I just beam when the Pittsburgh Courier is mentioned in movies or history lessons.
Last week, I was included in a large group shot for a staged reading that I did at the Homewood Library in June. It was called “Tambourines to Glory” by Langston Hughes.
When I found out via social media that our pictures were in the paper I ran to the newsstand and picked up two copies, one for me and one for my sister who I was getting ready to go and visit. She has a subscription, but I knew I would get this to her faster than the mailman.
Speaking of social media, the New Pittsburgh Courier is available online at www.newpittsburghcourier.com as well as on Facebook and Twitter.
Back to the issue at hand, those same people who ask where to buy it next want to know how they can get coverage for something they have coming up. It is easy, send me an email when you have established when and where your event is going to be and put request for coverage in the subject line. If I’m free I’ll be there. If I can’t come I may be able to send a photographer.
