I was on vacation and I kept hearing about this dress. I asked my niece what is this noise about a dress. She told me that it had to do with the color of “the dress.” I checked my Facebook page and there it was, the debate on the color of a dress. I came to find out that people were talking about it everywhere. It was featured on the local news in Orlando, Fla., while I was there and on the national news.
I took a look at the dress and could not see the importance of it. Who cares? Just like who cares about someone stealing Lupita Nyong’o’s pearl dress and who cares if the pearls were real or not? I doubt that the dress belonged to her anyway. Most of the garments and jewelry that the stars wear to the awards shows are borrowed.
Back to “the dress,” come to find out it was a photograph of a $77 dress that has ricocheted around the Internet, apparently breaking BuzzFeed’s traffic records, with 16 million hits in six hours. Really? The dress drew attention after Scottish musician Caitlin McNeill posted it on Tumblr with the question, “guys please help me — is this dress white and gold, or blue and black?”
The striped dress appears to be white and gold to some people, but blue and black to others — a phenomenon that neuroscientists say has to do with how our brains interpret colors differently. There are even some who see it as periwinkle and off white. I saw an interview with the designer of the dress and she says the dress is blue and black.
I’m starting to dislike social media and all that comes with it. People are letting the most insignificant things take over their lives. A friend told me about a woman rushing in to a doctor’s office questioning the nurse about the color of the dress.
Aren’t there still girls missing in Africa? Isn’t there still a passenger plane that crashed and has not been found? Aren’t people still committing senseless acts of violence? On ABC news they showed a picture of the dress and then asked the camera crew to say what color they thought the dress was. I can’t believe that they each saw something different. When I look at some pictures it appears to be a periwinkle and grayish brown. Is this the new version of “War of the Worlds”?
Ok are you old enough to remember that? “The War of the Worlds” is an episode of the American radio drama anthology series The Mercury Theatre on the Air. It was performed as a Halloween episode of the series on Oct. 30, 1938, and aired over the Columbia Broadcasting System radio network. Directed and narrated by actor and future filmmaker Orson Welles, the episode was an adaptation of H. G. Wells’ novel “The War of the Worlds” (1898). It became famous for causing mass panic, because the earth was being invaded by aliens. This dress debate has to be the modern day version, let’s be done.
