After the defense had its share of troubles in the first two games, they may have found their stride during their 40-9 win over the New England Patriots. The Lions forced a turnover on four of five drives led by Tom Brady. This included three fumbles an interception. The drive that didn’t end in a turnover was a three and out.
The defensive line continues to look strong. Newcomer Jason Jones had a standout performance sacking Brady twice and recovering a fumble. The Lions kept Brady under constant pressure and it seemed to disrupt the Patriots potent offense. The Patriots didn’t score a touchdown until late in the fourth.
The secondary looked to be recharged with Louis Delmas returning to the lineup. He recorded one tackle and recovered a fumble. He may not have played many series but it was good to see him able to get back on the field.
The offense was without Calvin Johnson once again and it showed. The offense stalled in field goal range four times in the first half. However, Matthew Stafford was able to hit Tony Scheffler for a nine yard touchdown in the second quarter. This was the first touchdown that the first team offense has scored in all of the preseason.
Reggie Bush was the focal point of the offense while he was in. While he may not have been effective running the ball he was a force in the passing game. His performance was highlighted by a 67 yard screen pass. He ended the day with five catches on seven targets for 103 yards.
Kellen Moore did nothing but help his chances to make the roster against the Patriots. He went 9-12 for 150 yards and two touchdowns. His touchdowns were thrown to Joseph Fauria and Michael Spurlock. Thaddeus Lewis got some reps late in the fourth but at this point has a very slim chance to make the roster.
The Lions are still looking for the answers to the back end of their receiving core. Ryan Broyles was able to step in for two catches for 32 yards. Patrick Edwards still remains in good position to make the team and continues to get targets. Matt Willis looks consistent and may have a spot on this team. Kris Durham and Corey Fuller continue to see limited action and it is tough to see their role going forward.
David Akers had four field goals and seems to have locked up his Position. Akers kicked a 47 yarder late in the third, leaving little for Harvard Rugland to do. Sam Martin looked good on kickoffs and dropped a punt inside the five. Special teams as a unit looks to be much improved from last year.
The Lions play their last preseason game on Thursday against the Buffalo Bills.
