A Clayton County sheriff’s deputy and a suspect were wounded Thursday morning in a shootout near Jonesboro High School.
One deputy was shot, and deputies returned fire, striking the suspect.
Both the wounded deputy and the suspect were taken to local hospitals. Channel 2 Action News reported at noon that the suspect has died.
Their identities and the deputy’s condition have not been released.
Gunfire was heard near 8 a.m. in a neighborhood near Thrailkill Road, a street that runs behind the school off Mount Zion Road.
Clayton sheriff’s Chief Deputy Garland Watkins told the AJC that the incident began after a deputy spotted a motorist “speeding through a school zone, driving recklessly.”
Jonesboro High School was put on lockdown Thursday morning after gunfire was heard near the Clayton County school’s campus.
The shooting did not happen inside the school, but gunfire reportedly broke out behind the school, near the intersection of Mount Zion Boulevard and Thrailkill Road. Jonesboro High is located at 7728 Mount Zion Blvd. in Jonesboro.
A spokesperson for the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office said that the incident involved one of their officers and they were still piecing together exactly what happened.
The lockdown was lifted according to published reports at 8:30 a.m. The first reports of the shooting suggest that a Clayton sheriff’s deputy was involved in the shooting.
