Black ice is seen has the culprit in more than two dozen accidents and very long traffic congestion in the early dawn hours, particularly on Interstate 20 west of downtown Atlanta as the weather dipped below freezing.
According to multiple reports, black ice helped cause 12 car accidents between I-20 between I-285 and the downtown connector. And another 14 vehicles were reportedly involved in accidents in Newton County, Ga. In fact, the interstate was shut down in both directions during rush hour, with eight cars clogging the eastbound lanes and six on the westbound side.
Other icing was reported by the Georgia Department of Transportation on I-85 near Clairmont Road, as well as in the Athens area and in the northwest corner of the state.
In northwest Georgia, Chattooga County Schools delayed classes for two hours Friday because of the threat of icing, Channel 2 Action News reported.
Temperatures at 7 a.m. ranged from 29 degrees in Alpharetta and Dunwoody and 30 in Dallas to 31 in Chamblee, 32 in Marietta and Peachtree City and 33 at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.
Nitz said skies will be sunny Friday and Saturday, but there’s a slight chance of rain late in the day Sunday.
Weekend highs will be in the low to mid-50s, with lows in the mid- to upper 30s, Nitz said.
