The Atlanta City Council congratulates Jonathan J. Hunt on his appointment as General Manager and Chief Executive Officer of the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) and looks forward to working in close partnership to strengthen transit service, improve mobility, and deliver transformational transportation investments for the people of Atlanta.
“I extend my congratulations to Jonathan Hunt on his appointment as the new MARTA CEO. I look forward to working closely with him in my capacity as Atlanta City Council Transportation Committee Chair to ensure the continued collaboration and success of our critical transportation partner,” said District 6 Councilmember Alex Wan.
As the City and MARTA continue advancing the More MARTA Program, the Council remains committed to fostering a collaborative relationship focused on transparency, accountability, and delivering the transit improvements Atlanta voters envisioned. In July, the Council unanimously approved legislation requesting the renegotiation of the More MARTA Intergovernmental Agreement to better align the City’s and MARTA’s shared priorities and ensure continued success for the program.
“After many years of service on the MARTA Board, I strongly believe that the next five to seven years at MARTA will shape Atlanta and the metro area more than any other time since the agency was founded,” said District 7 Councilmember Thomas Worthy, vice chair of the Transportation Committee and sponsor of the More MARTA IGA legislation, said.
“Safety, service, reliability and project delivery is the whole ballgame right now, and I’m confident in the Board’s search process that they’ve found a leader who won’t let timelines fall through the cracks. I look forward to working with CEO Hunt to strengthen the partnership between MARTA and the City as we continue advancing the More MARTA Program.”
Hunt brings more than a decade of leadership experience at MARTA, where he has served in several senior legal and executive roles, culminating in his appointment as Interim General Manager and CEO in 2025. His career includes service as a Senior Assistant City Attorney for the City of Atlanta supporting Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, as well as private-sector legal and engineering experience, providing a strong understanding of transportation infrastructure, governance, and regional collaboration.
