Keisha Lance Bottoms, former mayor of Atlanta, and Democratic candidate for Governor of Georgia, issued the following statement in response to Donald Trump’s attacks on vote-by-mail and reports he is preparing an executive order targeting lawful absentee voting:
“Donald Trump is once again trying to rig the rules because he’s afraid of the voters. It’s deeply concerning that the President is making this announcement on vote-by-mail, parroting the election advice he just got from Vladimir Putin. The fact is that vote-by-mail is safe, secure, and used by seniors, active-duty military, rural communities, caregivers, and working families who can’t always get to the polls on Election Day. Any effort to make it harder for Georgians to cast a lawful ballot is an attack on our freedoms.
“In Georgia, we count every legal vote and we don’t let politicians pick which voters get a voice. As Mayor, I stood up to provide new resources for voters when state Republicans put unnecessary roadblocks in the way of mail-in voting. As Governor, I will stand up and fight for our voting rights, because access to the polls is access to our democracy. I will veto any bill that restricts lawful absentee voting, and strengthen our election infrastructure so Georgians can vote securely by mail, early in person, or on Election Day. Georgians deserve leaders who expand our democracy, not undermine it. We will not be bullied, and we will not go backward.”
