An active shooter entered the CVS at Clifton Road and began firing multiple rounds at the CDC office building at approximately 4:50 p.m. today. The shooter who is dead from a gunshot wound, reportedly took aim at the Centers for Disease Control security officers in the building directly across the street from the pharmacy. It is unclear at this time if the wound was self-inflicted or the result of shots fired from responding officers. A DeKalb County police officer who was reportedly the first to respond to a call of shots fired was wounded by the assailant and ilater died at Emory Hospital.
Atlanta police responded and found the DeKalb officer in critical condition.
DeKalb County Police chief and DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran Johnson was with the officer’s family at Emory hospital. The officer succumbed to his injuries hours later.
All 92 children who were in a day care facility attached to the CDC have been moved to the Clifton School campus are safe and in the process of being reunited with their families. Parents may pick up children at 1900 Starvine Way at the Clifton School campus.
Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens stated in a news conference at the scene that the suspect was a white male. No motive is known at this time.
Today’s shooting is the third mass shooting in Atlanta in a week. Sgt Quornelius Radford, 28, a Ft. Stewart Army seargent, shot five other soldiers at the base earlier this week. On Edgewood Avenue in a popular nightlife district, 1 man was killed, and 10 others were wounded over the last weekend.
