Trump Adminstration Closes Job Corps Centers in Albany and Brunswick, Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms Calls for Georgia to Invest in Job Training

Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms Calls for Georgia to Invest in Job Training, Following Trump Administration’s Decision to Close

Two Job Corps Centers in Albany and Brunswick will likely close their doors by June 30th, after President Donald Trump’s Department of Labor announced its plan Friday to close down Job Corps centers around the country. These Job Centers have existed since 1964, providing critical career training and employment opportunities for low-income youth in Georgia.

Georgia gubernatorial candidate Keisha Lance Bottoms condemned the Trump Administration’s decision and urged the Administration to reverse course before June 30. Bottoms emphasized the importance of gubernatorial action on job training, given the decisions by the Trump Administration in Washington.

“The Trump Administration should reverse its backwards plan to close Georgia’s Job Corps Centers at the end of the month,” said Keisha Lance Bottoms, Democratic candidate for governor. “It’s mind-boggling that the administration would choose to cut a successful program that helps Americans get training and education they need for the workforce.

“As Mayor of Atlanta, I was proud to create the Center for Workforce Innovation at Atlanta Technical College and to expand Atlanta’s Youth Entrepreneurship Program to provide hands-on education that creates economic opportunity. As Governor, I will build on these successes to create and expand similar education and job skills programs. With uncertainty from Washington, Georgians need a governor who will make it a top priority to invest in workforce training — and that’s exactly what I’ll do.”

Under her mayorship, Keisha Lance Bottoms worked tirelessly to foster economic opportunities. The Center for Workforce Innovation partnered Atlanta Technical College with corporations to invest in a high quality education for skilled trades including repairing airplanes and electrical construction.

Atlanta’s Youth Entrepreneurship Program helped  provide job opportunities and supportive services to youth, giving young people monthly stipend while engaging in mentoring, job readiness training, leadership development and entrepreneurship certification programs.
