Black Veterans Raising Alarms of Anti-DEI in Military Can Affect Recruitment

In January, President Donald Trump signed an executive order banning the Defense Department from promoting its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) content resulting in the removal of web pages dedicated to prominent people of color, including General Charles C. Rogers, a Black recipient of the Medal of Honor. Black veterans are now raising alarms that this effort will impact recruitment efforts.

Trump has made it a top goal of his second term to eliminate DEI across all federal agencies and institutions that receive federal funding. The Hill reported that nearly 400 books that allegedly promoted DEI were removed from a Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD.

A 2023 survey by Syracuse University also found that there are more than 350,000 active duty Black Americans and more than 2.4 million Black veterans.

Relatedly, an April 1 forum on Capitol Hill featured representatives from civil rights organizations including the Lawyers Committee on Civil Rights, the NAACP, and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund that focused on legacy civil rights policy and its importance. Participants in the forum spoke about President Trump’s opposition to DEI and what their organizations are doing in resistance.
