Former First Lady Michelle Obama has an urgent message: we need to vote in the 2022 midterm election.

We’ve got to vote like the future of our democracy depends on it,” Obama wrote in a letter entitled “Fight for Our Vote” published Sunday (January 9) in The New York Times as an ad.

“One year ago, we witnessed an unprecedented assault on our Capitol and our democracy,” she wrote. “From Georgia and Florida to Iowa and Texas, states passed laws designed to make it harder for Americans to vote. And in other state legislatures across the nation, lawmakers have attempted to do the same.”

She went on to say that her voting rights organization When We All Vote is launching a campaign to get a million new voters registered across the country and have at least 100,000 voters call their senators to get federal voting rights bills passed.

In 2020, millions made their voices heard at the polls. But now, folks who oppose that progress are making it harder to vote. That’s why I’m asking you to join @WhenWeAllVote and 30 other organizations to turn out more voters and urge Congress to pass voting rights legislation. pic.twitter.com/hwgyyuTGy9

The former First Lady’s message comes as two key pieces of voting rights legislation, the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and the Freedom to Vote Act remain stalled in the Senate and just before President Joe Biden travels to Georgia to speak on voter suppression, Politico reported.

The midterm election is heating up with numerous seats opening up in the House, not to mention the countless critical local elections where judges, district attorneys, mayors, city councils, school boards and more will be up for grabs.

Advocates are getting votings rights information in the hands of eligible voters as key races across the country could shift power in Congress.

Thirty organizations –– including Georgia candidate for governor Stacey AbramsFair Fight Action, Vote Latino Foundation, NextGen America, LeBron JamesMore Than A Vote, and Rock the Vote –– all signed Obama’s letter.

“We stand united in our conviction to organize and turn out voters in the 2022 midterm elections, and make our democracy work for all of us,” the letter reads.
