New Atlanta Charter School Open Doors; Provides Options to Parents Concerned About APS Closings
Genesis Innovation Academy, a State-Approved Charter School, holds informational sessions for parents
WHAT: Genesis Innovation Academy, a free public charter school, is holding several informational sessions this spring for parents interested in enrolling their children. Genesis will open its doors in Fall 2017 for students entering kindergarten through 6th grade.
Founded by Dr. Gavin Samms, a graduate of Harvard University and Georgia Institute of Technology, Genesis Innovation Academy fills a gap in the educational system. “With so much uncertainty about school closings and changes, parents need options,” says Dr. Samms. “Moms and dads are stressed about where to send their children. We want them to know that Genesis is the perfect place for them.”
Genesis offers students a cross-disciplinary curriculum. “We are pairing the traditional subjects with curriculum that challenges scholars to be the creative, critical-thinkers who prosper in the 21st century,” says Dr. Samms. “So Yes! We teach math. However, we connect math to economics, investing and finance.” Dr. Samms has coined the E5 curriculum model. Scholars apply core subjects to the study of Engineering (STEM), Economics, Entrepreneurship, Ethics, and Expression.
Genesis also offers single-gender classrooms. “Boys are less engaged, suspended and expelled more, and have lower grades. For urban boys, this is a crisis,” says Samms. “Our girls are often discouraged from pursuing high paying, high-power fields that men dominate. We cannot continue to pretend our sons and daughters have the same needs. They do not!”
The informational sessions are open to parents. Dr. Samms will be on hand to answer questions.
