The “Celebration of Women,” the annual signature luncheon for the Atlanta Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will take place on Saturday, April 2, at 11:30 A.M. at the Renaissance Concourse Atlanta Airport Hotel. This fundraising affair will benefit scholarship recipients and provide funding for the organization’s on-going social action programs that include the Betty Shabazz Academy, the Delta GEMS, and the EMBODI project for young men.
The tribute to women celebrates the achievements of women who are “Empowered Leaders Impacting the Global Community” and is the platform for the presentation of scholarships and awards to many deserving leaders and students.
The “Celebration of Women” will salute women who continue to surpass the norm and have excelled in many facets of their lives and careers making a difference in the world around us. The coveted Fortitude Award will be given to Jannie Ligons, the whistleblower who initiated charges against the convicted Oklahoma police officer who sexually assaulted African American women.
The Trailblazer Award will go to several outstanding women including The Honorable Stacey Abrams, GA. House Minority Leader; Dr. Gwendolyn Boyd, the first African American woman to be president of Alabama State University and former National President of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated; Xernona Clayton, the first African-American woman to host her own TV show and the founder of the Trumpet Awards as well as the founder of the International Civil Rights Walk of Fame; and Joni Taylor, the first African American female coach of the woman’s basketball team at the University of Georgia.
The Delta Chapter Torch Awards will be presented to women who have excelled in multiple leadership roles throughout metropolitan Atlanta. These awardees include; Wylma Blanding, Rosalind Drakeford, Dr. Christine King Farris, Minnie Jenkins-Miller, Crystal Jones, Rahsheen Lucas, Wonya Lucas, Annie Matthews, Naomi Ward, Paulyne Morgan White, and Margaret Withers.
“Honoring Women of Outstanding Service and Achievement” is the theme for the Celebration of Women 2016 affair which is chaired by Annease Jones and co-chaired by Carolyn Young, and Carolyn Wyatt. The mistress of ceremony for the luncheon will be WGCL TV (CBS) Channel 46’s morning anchor Gloria Neal.
