Stylist Marquita Gatling isn’t the typical career hair stylist. She hails from an old established Chicago family established  and could have followed the family tradition and become a Funeral Home director, funeral service manager, morticians, undertaker or funeral Makeup Artist. Instead Marquita chose to pursue the beauty industry for the living and is a rising star in a very competitive industry.

About being selected by Mizani as a participant in the #SHOUTYOURBEAUTY at the American Beauty Show this up coming weekend  Saturday March 12, 2016, Marquita is excited. The Beauty Changes Lives Foundation is hosing the Beauty Changes Lives event at Soldier Field in Chicago March 12, 2016, asking attendees to #shoutyourbeauty and boasting a 200-foot runway and teams of new talent paired with mentors.

This incredible production will disrupt the conventional notions of beauty as we of the nextgen show our creativity. So .. how did Marquita from the famous Gatling Funeral Homes choose beauty as a career? “Well … my family is full of funeral directors – and though I am still in the family business, I chose beauty as a career because I’d felt I was being forced to squeeze myself into a box in which I did not fit!”

“Being a hair artist has allowed me to interact with people in so many ways and on so many levels and to do so without judgement. I attended Paul Mitchell School in Chicago, where I work at Infinate Styles Barber & Beauty Salon.

I am very active in the community and am most proud that this year I was able to bless 17 young homeless mothers with free beauty makeovers head to toe: business casual clothing, coats, free haircuts for their sons and a princess party for their daughters . . . it was a beautiful way to remind me of why I became a hair stylist, of why I chose the beauty industry.”

“I shout my beauty unapologetically EVERYDAY … I might rock my natural hair one day, wear my wig the next, or even do a barber do. I shout my beauty by living outside the box and I inspire others to do the same. I encourage others to live a little! Dare to be different — try different styles and colors! My little baby girl wears a Mohawk!”

The 4th Annual Beauty Changes Lives Experience is an opportunity for all of us to rewrite the story when it comes to beauty – challenging conventional perceptions and redefining the many ways beauty is celebrated,” said Lynelle Lynch, president of the Beauty Changes Lives Foundation. Beauty Changes Lives is a non-profit, 501c3 that raises funds for beauty school scholarships, professional beauty mentorships and continuing education. The Foundation has awarded more than $1M in scholarships since 2013.

The #shoutyourbeauty campaign doesn’t end after the runway, though—in August, Beauty Changes Lives will continue its mission to “rewrite the story” when it comes to beauty by inviting all salons nationwide to participate in a dedicated Shout Your Beauty Day.
