Growing up poor is one thing. But being the product of a dynasty in any industry, which often includes fame and riches, can bring its own set of pressures, complexities and challenges. Just ask the children and grandchildren of the Kennedys. Just ask the offspring of Martin Luther King Jr, whose exploits and conflicts often make front-page headlines. Just ask the children of Michael Jordan.

The pressure to replicate the feats of the parent(s) can sometimes be oppressive and, in some cases, debilitating.
This is, in essence, is what the cast of “Growing Up Hip Hop” face as they chronicle their maturation into adulthood and entrance into the marketplace, trying to carve out their own identities apart from their famous parents, all while negotiating the rollercoaster emotional rides their decisions and experiences take them on.

The red carpet premiere of “Growing Up Hip Hop — Angela Simmons, Romeo Miller, Damon “Boogie” Dash, Kristinia DeBarge, TJ Mizell and Egypt Criss — featured the Who’s Who of Atlanta’s celebrity world, including “Real Housewives of Atlanta’s” Kenya Moore, Porsha Williams and Phaedra Parks, “Love and Hip Hop” stars Joseline Hernandez, Stevie J, Mimi Faust and Erica Dixon, Demetria McKinney, “Selling It: In the ATL” cast members Alana Banks, Jae Christian, Okevia Wilson, Chrishena Stanley, and Sarah Lowe, Ebony Steele, Sandra “Pepa” Denton, Toya Wright, DJ Mike Jackson, and many others.

Meet the princes and princesses of the hip hop world on WE tv’s new dynamic docu-series Growing Up Hip Hop, premiering Thursday Jan 7th at 10pm ET/PT.  Raised by hip hop legends, the six offspring of rap and R&B icons work hard to gain independence and step out of their famous parents’ shadows.

With their love and work lives intertwined, each member of this this tight-knit group is facing a surprising challenge that will test their loyalties within the group and even relationships with their own mothers and fathers.
Following the red carpet and premiere of the rollercoaster first episode of “Growing Up Hip Hop,” radio personality Ebony Steele led the cast in a panel discussion of their role and what it was actually like to grow up in the shadows of their famous, multimillionaire parents.
