So on Saturday, November 14, the Boy Scouts of America, Pathway to Adventure Council will present five Chicago community leaders with the Whitney M. Young Jr. Service Award in recognition of their outstanding service to inner-city youth.
Whitney Young civil rights activist for whom the award is named.
The award is named after American Civil Rights leader Whitney M. Young Jr. who dedicated his life to serving and improving the lives of African Americans across the country.
“Just like Mr. Young himself, this year’s honorees have demonstrated exceptional service and have blazed a trail of leadership in improving life in all areas of our great city,” said Pathway to Adventure Council COO Marc Ryan. “Their dedication to organizations like the Boy Scouts of America make our communities better places to live and work. Mr. Young would be proud to know these fine gentlemen and would delight in not only what they have accomplished thus far, but what they are sure to do in the future.”

This year’s honorary chairmen are John W. Rogers Jr, CEO & Chairman of Ariel Investments, and Dr. Ronald J. Temple, CEO of The Center for Global & International Education.

The award recipients’ contributions include donating funds to send underprivileged youth to camp, facilitating financial-literacy programs, volunteering in Scouting programs, providing jobs and job-trainings, and chaperoning trips aimed at enlightening youth about opportunities to attend college.
The awards dinner also serves as a fundraiser for the Scouting programs the honorees have championed. Last year, the event funded programs for over 1,100 at-risk and low-income youth served by Pathway to Adventure Council. These programs foster lasting relationships between youth and positive mentors, improve self-esteem and promote community service and leadership.
This 7th annual Whitney M. Young, Jr Awards Dinner will be held on Saturday, November 14th 2015, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Chicago, 151 E. Wacker Drive.

Whitney M. Young, Jr. was an educator and U.S. civil rights leader who spearheaded the drive for equal opportunity for African Americans in industry and government during his 10 years as head of the National Urban League.
The Whitney M. Young Jr. Service Award recognizes outstanding service by an adult individual or by an organization for demonstrated involvement in the development and implementation of Scouting opportunities for youth from rural or low-income urban backgrounds.
