Cameras to solve the problem, crime?

Man-carjacked-outside-Detroit-gas-stationThe truth is… crime is relevant in all major cities across America.
Nevertheless, in Michigan – and Detroit specifically, media does a great job in promoting the amount of crime that happens in this city.
The city’s police and citizens will have more to help alleviate and solve crimes committed at gas stations as the city recently announced a partnership with owners to install more cameras at pumps and other key areas.
“We want to use technology to fight this and make gas stations zones of safety,” said Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan at last week’s Techonomy Detroit conference. “The response from gas station owners is very positive.”
The city has yet to finalize the details of the proposed agreement.
“The mayor and the gas station owners are on the same page as far as improving safety, and we are working toward an effective solution that works for our business owners, as well as the city of Detroit and the community,” the mayor’s office said via email. “The issue the mayor mentioned at Techonomy is very early in the process at this point, and we likely will have something more to say on this a bit later.”
The increase in cameras is expected to help reduce the number of crimes according to city officials.
Detroit Police Chief James Craig was quoted earlier this year discouraging anyone from getting gas at night due to the chances of being a victim of a crime.
His words ring louder today, maybe more than they did then.
“So far, we have put a tremendous effort into carjackings and gas station robberies,” said Craig. “Carjacking numbers have taken a tremendous drop. We are also working with gas station owners in an attempt to make their stations safer for their customers.”
