UPDATE: Shaun King, the #BlackLivesMatter” activist who was allegedly outed by a conservative publication (Breitbart.com) as posing as a biracial man who is really white, has responded in a Twitter rant denying that he ever lied about his race:
In a series of numbered tweets that reach up to 36, King defended himself and expressed his feelings.
Furthermore, MSNBC’s Joy Reid had this to say on the matter:
I did talk to Shaun. I can tell you that Shaun King is biracial. There is no reason to doubt that he is biracial. The stories about what he said regarding getting his scholarship, etc, I think you have to consider the source. I don’t think they’re credible absent any actual reporting.
The story essentially is that the two people who are listed on Shaun King’s birth certificate, his mom and his dad, his mother is his biological mother, the man listed on his birth certificate is not his biological father.
I think getting into further details about who his biological father is, unfairly drags his mother into a story—and she is not a public figure. This is a very private story between his mom, dad, and the person who is his biological father. But Shaun King, since he was about 8 or 9 years old, has known that his dad is not his biological father.
So did Breitbart jump the gun and fail to complete the investigation that includes identifying who his biological father is? And what was the motivation behind trying to figure out King’s racial identity in the first place? Was it a tactic to invalidate King’s work as a prominent activist in the #BlackLivesMatter movement?
Sound off below
What … Again?!?
Just months after former Spokane, Wash. NAACP president Rachel Dolezal was exposed as a white woman posing as an African American female, a leading activist for the “Black Lives Matter” movement has been allegedly made out to be a full-fledged Caucasian camouflaging his true identity.
According to the conservative publication Breitbart, King is not a biracial product of a white mother and black father, but is 100 percent white. Breitbart.com reportedly uncovered the man’s birth certificate, which has him listed as being born in Versailles, Ky. to a father named Jeffrey Wayne King. When the name was matched to a mugshot of Jeffrey Wayne King, it showed that he is a white man, Breitbart stated.
Moreover, Shaun King, 35, was allegedly beguiling enough to fool Oprah Winfrey into giving him a full scholarship to arguably the most prestigious HBCU, Morehouse College, the New York Daily News reports.
King himself hasn’t responded to the report — but it’s not a stretch to think that Oprah will have extreme interest in what he says. King has said he got a leadership scholarship from O to attend Morehouse College.
Morehouse College sent out a tweet refusing to comment on the matter, but did say this via Twitter: “Morehouse College has no comment on the @ShaunKing allegations. However, Morehouse does not grant admissions or scholarships based on race.”
King gained notoriety for his activism following Michael Brown’s death in Ferguson. The media has tried to contact King and Oprah about the controversy, but no response has been forwarded as of yet.
