While “Empire’s” meteoric rise is lauded by critics, fans and pop culture experts alike, there are some urban sophisticates who find the show about a hip hop record label dynasty as repulsive and damaging.
Dr. Boyce Watkins, a highly-respected scholar, Syracuse University professor and syndicated columnist, denounced “Empire” as “ghetto-fied hood drama” and “coonery” and says the Fox show, a runaway blockbuster that had the biggest inaugural season ratings since Shonda Rhimes’ “Grey’s Anatomy” more than a decade ago, is pure entertainment garbage.
