In a sign of distrust and disgust, hundreds of New York police officers turned their backs on Mayor Bill de Blasio when he addressed the two slain officers at their funeral this past weekend.
The NYPD, who made the outlandish proclamation that the blood of the “assassinated” officers was on the mayor’s hands, turned their backs on the screen where de Blasio spoke at the funeral at the Christ Tabernacle Church, in the Glendale neighborhood of Queens, which was broadcast to thousands of police who gathered outside.
Sgt. Myron Joseph of the New Rochelle Police Department said he and fellow officers turned their backs spontaneously to “support our brothers in the NYPD” after the ambush murder of Rafael Ramos and Wnjian Liu in the Bed-Stuy section of Brooklyn in New York City.
The mayor tried to extend an olive branch to the NYPD during the funeral speech, saying he said he wanted to “extend my condolences to another family — the family of the NYPD — that is hurting so deeply right now.”
This is the second time officers turned their backs on de Blasio; they also did so the night after Ramos and Liu were shot and killed when the mayor showed up at the hospital where the late officers were officially pronounced dead.
De Blasio drew the ire of officers when he seemingly sympathized with the thousands of protesters who demonstrated against the chokehold death of Eric Garner in New York’s Staten Island borough this past summer.
