WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. — I remember when former publicist Ava DuVernay used to usher me and other journalists down the ostentatious corridors of the pristine Four Seasons Hotel in nearby Beverly Hills to interview Hollywood stars and publicize their movies. Today, she is publicizing her own films.
She and Oprah Winfrey, who is becoming a producing powerhouse in addition to her status as a media tycoon, headlined a prestigious panel and red carpet premiere of the Civil Rights-era film SELMAÂ at the AFI Film Festival in Los Angeles.
