DeKalb County has introduced a new program aimed at protecting the safety and well-being of its older residents by offering free removal of hazardous trees.
The initiative, called the Senior Tree Removal Program, was approved by the Board of Commissioners in January 2025 and will be administered by the Department of Community Development.
County leaders say the program demonstrates their commitment to protecting the county’s most vulnerable population.
“This program reflects our commitment to protecting and supporting our senior residents,” said CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson. “By removing dangerous trees at no cost, we are ensuring that seniors can remain safe in their homes and communities without the burden of unexpected expenses.”
The program provides financial assistance to qualifying seniors who need help addressing hazardous trees that could pose risks to their homes or neighborhoods.
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify, applicants must:
Be a DeKalb County homeowner aged 62 or older
Own and live in the property where the tree removal is requested
Have a household income at or below 60 percent of the Area Median Income (AMI). For a family of four, that threshold is $68,520.
How to Apply
Pre-application cards are available at 178 Sams Street, Suite A3500 in Decatur, or by calling 404-371-2693 between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Completed cards may be mailed back or returned in person to the same address.
Because funding is limited, officials urge eligible residents to apply as soon as possible.
Allen Mitchell, director of the Department of Community Development, said the program is designed to break down barriers that often prevent seniors from getting needed help.
“We want seniors to know this resource is here for them,” Mitchell said. “Too often, the cost of tree removal prevents necessary action. This program helps eliminate that barrier and allows us to directly improve the safety and quality of life for our residents.”
