Atlanta City Council Approves Stringent Guidelines on City-Issued Credit Cards

Users of city-issued credit cards must abide by a list of acceptable and nonacceptable terms of usage after the Atlanta City Council approved new regulations on Tuesday.
Ordinance 19-O-1004, sponsored by Council members Andre Dickens and co-sponsored by J.P. Matzigkeit, now codifies those terms in the city code. It was approved unanimously.
“This credit card legislation is another important step towards a more accountable and transparent government,” Council member Dickens said. “By working with the Mayor’s administration, law department, and finance team, we continue to build the public’s trust in their government.”
The policy is not intended to replace current State of Georgia statutes but is intended to comply with such state laws and establish more efficient guidelines for elected officials, designated executive officials and employees using such purchasing cards.
“This legislation will bring transparency to the use of taxpayer dollars,” Council member Matzigkeit said.  “To further clarify the new policy, we included specific examples of card usage that not allowed and is not directly related to city business.
Violating the new guidelines may result in disciplinary action including but not limited to felony criminal prosecution.
The following types of purchases and uses are strictly prohibited:
