Park Pride honors five community leaders with 2017 Inspiration Awards

On Monday, March 27, 2017, Park Pride announced five recipients of the 2017 Inspiration Awards during the Parks and Greenspace Conference, Connecting with Parks, a theme that explored how greenspaces bridge the gaps between individuals, communities and political jurisdictions.
The Inspiration Awards annually honor leaders who inspire others to expand and improve public parks and greenspaces and work to raise awareness about critical, relevant park issues.
“As Atlanta continues to grow and develop,” explains Michael Halicki, Park Pride’s Executive Director, “it is so important that we have champions dedicated to creating strong ties between our communities and their greenspaces. The community leaders we’ve recognized this year give so much of themselves to engage, motivate and inspire communities to action on behalf of greenspace, and we’re so appreciative for their service.”
The winners, selected from a pool of leaders nominated by their communities from across metro Atlanta, were chosen because of their substantial contribution to greenspaces. This year’s Inspiration Award Winners include: Rochelle Callender, for her years of dedication to the development of Flat Shoals Park in DeKalb County; Jesse Grossman, for his commitment to volunteerism, bringing thousands of volunteers into Atlanta parks through his organization, Community Bucket; Nancy Jones, for her passion and drive to found the Blue Heron Nature Preserve and nurture its growth for 16 years before retiring in 2016; Barbara Marin, for her leadership and organization that led to the creation of a greenspace for neighbors to gather, Springbrook Park in DeKalb County; and Mother Mamie Moore, for her advocacy and stewardship efforts on behalf of her community and Lindsay Street Park, the first park in the English Avenue neighborhood.
