The 2017 Delta Sigma Theta Atlanta Alumnae Chapter International Film Festival with Sheila Fedrick Sex Trafficking Aviation Hero

April 1 at the Southwest Arts Center

The Third Annual Delta Sigma Theta International Film Festival: Through the Roof” will be held on Saturday, April 1 at the Southwest Arts Center, 915 New Hope Rd, SW Atlanta. Coordinated by the International Awareness and Involvement Committee of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. Atlanta Alumnae Chapter.

Andrea L. Morgan, Chair of the committee, explained that film is a great medium to get people to think about the world in different and more creative perspectives and increases the community’s awareness of international affairs.

Shelia Fedrick, special guest for the festival, is the Alaska Airlines Stewardess who in 2016 rescued a victim of sex trafficking, Ms. Fedrick will make remarks about her role in the rescue and the importance of everyone, especially travelers, to know the signs about sex trafficking and to speak up.  Ms. Fedrick’s appearance was inspired by the committee members who made a film themselves in 2016 about sex trafficking, which will be shown at the festival.

Films submitted were required to be less than five years out of production and the principle message of the films had to be international in scope. Each entry was accompanied by a 250-word synopsis of the film and URL link, where applicable. Foreign language films were required to English subtitles and participants were encouraged to submit their films through YouTube links, however DVD submissions were accepted.

“In addition to providing international awareness to our community, we also hope to use the proceeds of the festival to benefit the Adelaide Tambo School in Soweto, South Africa,” said Dr. Sheila Flemming-Hunter, the team lead for the festival. The school was formerly known as JC Merkin School and was established in 1980. It is situated in White – City, Jabavu, in Soweto. The school provides education to 381 learners with physical and learning disabilities in grades first through twelfth, enrolling both day and boarding scholars. Most of the learners come from disadvantaged families, others are orphans raised by grandparents, and their social grants maintain families. Those attending the festival will not only be enlightened and entertained but they will also assist students in South Africa who are in need.
