GUESTS AT LE DINER EN BLANC

At the last minute, the secret location is revealed to hundreds of friends who have all been patiently waiting to learn where Diner en Blanc will take place. Hundreds of people, dressed all in white, and conducting themselves with the greatest decorum, elegance and etiquette, all meet for a mass “chic picnic” in a public space.

That is a brief description of Le Diner en Blanc Pittsburgh 2016. On Aug. 27, more than 800 gathered in PPG Place for year two of an evening that now takes place in more than 70 cities around the world. People who could not get a reservation in Atlanta, Washington, D.C. and Virginia came to Pittsburgh just for this night and said they will come again. For some, this was a repeat visit to Pittsburgh. A group from Hampton, Va., said they like to be open to all types of events and we should embrace difference. Those who were not involved in the dinner stood on the sidelines and took pictures.
This year’s Le Diner en Blanc Pittsburgh was sponsored in part by Apothic White Wine. Le Diner en Blanc was launched with just a handful of friends by François Pasquier nearly 30 years ago. Le Dîner en Blanc de Paris now assembles over 10,000 guests every year, with a record 15,000 people attending the 25th anniversary in 2013.
Those who attend in Pittsburgh next year should be prepared to bring your own table, chairs, food, china, a lighter to light your sparkler and a napkin to wave to signal the start of dinner. And, of course, wear your most elegant white outfit.
